For the custom packs later supported via the launcher, the mod pack makers there needed to show proof to the FTB Team, that they also had full permissions. With the FTB Launcher there was made a promise, that they would only distribute packs, where they had permission from every mod author to user their mods in that way. That kicked off the big discussion about if mods should be freely usable in modpacks, or if the pack maker needs permission.įTB stands for Feed The Beast, a well known modpack from back then, where the pack makers hade made sure, that they were allowed to distribute the pack. So that launcher effectively removed the bit of income for the modders. Back then the individual mods were very often to be downloaded through ad.fly links. The Technic Team offered the download of their modpacks by offering all the files directly. So from the perspective of a modpack team, how are you guys introducing a feeling of real discovery of something new into a modded ecosystem where everyone has already seen it before, so to speak?įTB as a modpack launcher came around thanks to Tekkit. Even with expert packs that change recipes to promote cross-mod interactions, the feeling is different because players know how those mods work and the tweaks are more of a problem-solving challenge than a truly new discovery. Nowadays, I feel like most people look at mods and think "hey, I've played that already, I know what it's about" so the feeling of discovery is much harder to capture with the exception of a brand new modded player. Heck, even the concept of a "modpack" in 1.2.5 was pretty fresh. so memorable was that they were made in a very different time from today, when a lot of what we consider typical in modded MC was new and original.
